an afternoon at the master's

this afternoon, I was fortunate to get to spend the afternoon at the master's practice round. big time thanks to my boss who gave me the two tickets. i took my dearest friend with me, and she had the most wonderful hat on the entire grounds. the hat was her grandfathers, and on it is every badge from every masters from 1959 to 2002 (except for maybe one that didn't make it on the hat). He attended every year without fail. but since he died in 2003, the hat hadn't been back to the tournament. but today, it made its triumphant return.

Augusta native Charles Howell III putting at 17

Martin Kaymer teeing off at 18--we liked his pink shirt

lawnmower parade at the end of the day. what could possibly need mowing? we wondered...

well, if you EVER have stray tickets and every other person that is higher on the list than Josh can't make it -- call him. He just was dreaming this weekend about how neat it would be to go to the Masters.

Do you know what the deal about tickets is? They aren't for public sale, right? Who are/were they given to? Does your friend's granddad's tickets still get to be used by his family?

Tickets are not for public sale. They have had "the list" open a couple of times over the past 30 years, but it is currently closed. I don't know how they decided who got on the list when it was open. It may have been first come, first serve when tickets became available.

My impression of the system is that once you "got tickets", you would continue getting them each year. I'm not sure if they can be transferred in a family if the person dies, for example. I suspect it would work something like that, as otherwise it would be very rare for tickets to be given to people on the waiting list.

my friend's family was not able to transfer her grandfather's tickets, although they had heard that it might be a possibility.

as Lawrence said, tournament tickets are not for public sale. I honestly don't know the exact details on how they have decided who to give them to.

practice round tickets, however, are different. they are sold on a lottery basis each year. you can submit an application to the national to be included in the lottery. the deadline for requesting an application is may 1 for the 2009 practice rounds.
